Useful Websites for Research: Resources for Beginner Formulators

As an R&D lab tech, my day is pretty much a split between two modes: half the time, I’m in the lab whipping up batches of products, and the other half, I’m at my desk, buried in research, staring intensely at my screen like it holds the secrets of the universe. I love being hands on– measuring, mixing, and watching everything come together. But the truth is, the magic doesn’t start there. It starts “behind the scenes,” with all the research, planning, and prep work you do beforehand to make sure the actual formulation process goes as smoothly as possible.

When I first started, though? Overwhelmed doesn’t even begin to cover it. There was so much information out there, and I had no clue where to start. I’d find myself in endless Google rabbit holes, juggling tabs, and constantly asking my more experienced coworkers for help narrowing down resources. It felt like trying to find the right puzzle pieces in a box full of random junk.

Luckily, after plenty of trial and error (and a little guidance), I’ve built a go-to list of sources that make tackling a new project way less intimidating. Whether I’m deep into ingredient research, brushing up on regulations, or just scrolling for fun during a coffee break, these websites have become my secret weapons.

Here are some of my absolute favorite sites that make the wild world of cosmetic formulation feel a little less chaotic—and a lot more manageable!

1. Personal Care Magazine

Visit: Personal Care Magazine
This site is a powerhouse for keeping up with the latest in the beauty formulation world. If you’re diving deeper into the professional side of the industry, you’ll find this especially useful.

Why it’s a must-have resource:

  • Innovative Ingredients: Get updates on cutting-edge ingredients and tech that brands are raving about.
  • Regulation News: From U.S. FDA updates to global compliance trends (like the EU’s stringent standards or Asia’s innovative edge), it keeps you informed.
  • Formulation Samples: Their database includes formulas contributed by ingredient manufacturers. These samples often highlight how to use specific raw materials effectively.
  • Supplier Directory: An easy-to-navigate list of ingredient suppliers, so you’re not left guessing where to find that elusive emulsifier.
  • Industry Analysis: Insightful articles and interviews with R&D pros, marketing teams, and formulators that help bridge the gap between science and business.

Whether you’re looking for new ingredient inspiration or want to stay on top of regulations, this site delivers.

2. UL Prospector

Visit: UL Prospector
This is the website for ingredient research. If you’re in the middle of planning a new formulation, UL Prospector is like a Swiss Army knife for all your ingredient needs.

Here’s why it’s my go-to:

  • Search by Trade Name or INCI Name: Quickly locate the exact raw materials you need without playing a guessing game.
  • Technical Documents: Access TDS (Technical Data Sheets) and SDS (Safety Data Sheets) to get vital info on ingredient properties, usage guidelines, and safety protocols.
  • Sample Requests: Many listings have a “request a sample” button that lets you directly reach suppliers. No awkward cold emails or form-filling marathons needed.
  • Knowledge Center: Articles, webinars, and case studies to help you learn about ingredient trends and formulation techniques.

Pro Tip: I use UL Prospector alongside Knowde and SpecialChem. If I can’t find an ingredient on one platform, one of the others usually has it. UL Prospector shines for well-documented and newer ingredients.

3. INCI Decoder

Visit: INCI Decoder
This tool isn’t just for formulators—it’s also a favorite among skincare enthusiasts who want to decode product labels.

How it’s helpful for formulators:

  • Ingredient Breakdown: Learn what each ingredient in a product does and if it’s suitable for your target audience (e.g., sensitive or acne prone skin types).
  • DIY Inspiration: Love a commercial product? Check out its INCI list and create your own version. But here’s the catch: the same INCI name can refer to different grades or blends of an ingredient, so it’s not always a straightforward, step-by-step duplication.
    • For example, “glycerin” might sound simple, but depending on the supplier, it could have different purity levels or be derived from various sources.
  • Avoiding Marketing Hype: Identify which ingredients are making an impact and which are just filler or label claims.

The key is to use the INCI list as a blueprint rather than a full instruction manual. Experimentation and research will help you bridge the gaps and adapt the formula to your own needs. Plus, it’s a great way to learn about ingredient behavior and create something uniquely yours!

Pro Tip: I have very acne prone skin, and I use INCI Decoder often to see which ingredients are comedogenic or not.

4. INCI Guide

Visit: INCI Guide
If you’re a science geek or want to understand the “why” behind your formulations, INCI Guide is your playground.

What makes it stand out:

  • Chemical Properties & Functions: Dive into peptides, proteins, polymers, and oils to learn how they behave and interact in formulations.
  • Deep Dives: Offers a thorough explanation of ingredients’ roles and why certain combinations work better than others.
  • Molecular Visuals: Yes, you can even nerd out with molecular structures. Organic chemistry flashbacks, anyone?

It’s perfect for those moments when you want to geek out and truly understand the science behind the magic.

5. Forums & Communities

Sometimes, the best answers come from chatting with people who’ve been there, done that, and maybe spilled some emulsifiers along the way. These communities are a goldmine for troubleshooting, tips, and camaraderie:

  • Chemists Corner: This site has blogs, forums, and even online courses to help formulators at any stage.
  • Reddit (r/DIYBeauty): Full of ideas, ingredient sourcing tips, and plenty of real-world trials (and occasional errors).
  • LinkedIn: Follow and network with cosmetic chemists and industry leaders to keep up with trends and events!

Don’t be afraid to ask suppliers, fellow formulators, or mentors for advice. I’ve found that people in this field are surprisingly generous with their knowledge.

These resources have been game-changers for me, making the steep learning curve of formulation feel much more manageable. If you’ve got a favorite resource or tool I didn’t mention, drop it in the comments—I’d love to hear about it!
